Hydrogen is absent in the electrodes of new nickel-cadmium batteries, but during its service life the amount of hydrogen inside the electrodes increases (Table I, accumulators No. 1-3).
In the papers [8,9], by electrodes thermal decomposition, it was shown that hydrogen is accumulated in great amounts in electrodes of nickel-cadmium batteries in a course of their operation.
The nickel–hydrogen battery combines the positive nickel electrode of a nickel–cadmium battery and the negative electrode, including the catalyst and gas diffusion elements, of a fuel cell. During discharge, hydrogen contained in the pressure vessel is oxidized into water while the nickel oxyhydroxide electrode is reduced to nickel hydroxide.
During operation of nickel-cadmium batteries, a large amount of hydrogen accumulates in their electrodes. The density of the hydrogen energy stored in the oxide-nickel electrode is several times higher than the energy density in gasoline.
The nickel–cadmium battery (Ni–Cd battery or NiCad battery) is a type of rechargeable battery using nickel oxide hydroxide and metallic cadmium as electrodes.
In this study, it has been experimentally proven that the electrodes of the Ni-Cd batteries in the process of their operation absorb hydrogen in large quantities. There is no hydrogen inside the electrodes of new batteries, but after five years of service life the electrodes reach their maximum hydrogen capacity.
