Biobatteries are classified into several types like Enzymatic Bio-Battery, Microbial Bio-Battery, body fluid based bio-batteries, cellulose-based bio-batteries, etc. But Enzymatic Bio-Battery, Microbial Bio-Battery are the commonly used batteries.
Some biobatteries are currently on the market [131, 132]. The Sony sugar biobattery, some paper-based biobatteries, and stretchable biobatteries have been commercialized [133, 134]. Detailed features of these batteries are given below: 5.1. Sony sugar biobattery SONY developed an environmentally friendly biobattery using sugars (Fig. 10).
• Microbial bio-battery - Micro-organisms such as Escherichia coli, electric bacteria, etc., are involved in the breakdown of substrate (organic or inorganic). In both types of bio-batteries, the breakdown of the substrate yields protons and electrons.
Disposability Generally, biobatteries are disposable because the catalysts are biodegradable. However, the other components must be disposable and biodegradable. Many paper-based biobatteries have been proposed as a low-cost, eco-friendly, and disposable power source for immediate single-use applications [32, 119].
• Clean, non-toxic source of energy - Sources of energy (susbstrate material) for the functioning of a bio-battery are completely renewable, non-polluting, as well as environmentally-friendly (wastewater recycled to produce electricity). Therefore, unlike chemical batteries, bio-batteries are a clean, non-toxic source of energy.
