They are safer, have a higher energy density, and can be produced at a lower cost.
In summary, the quality of the production of a lithium-ion battery cell is ensured by monitoring numerous parameters along the process chain. In series production, the approach is to measure only as many parameters as necessary to ensure the required product quality. The systematic application of quality management methods enables this approach.
The rise in battery production faces challenges from manufacturing complexity and sensitivity, causing safety and reliability issues. This Perspective discusses the challenges and opportunities for high-quality battery production at scale.
Challenges in Industrial Battery Cell Manufacturing The basis for reducing scrap and, thus, lowering costs is mastering the process of cell production. The process of electrode production, including mixing, coating and calendering, belongs to the discipline of process engineering.

Electrode manufacturing starts with the reception of the materials in a dry room (environment with controlled humidity, temperature, and pressure).
In extreme cases, these defects may result in severe safety incidents, such as thermal runaway. Metal foreign matter is one of the main types of manufacturing defects, frequently causing internal short circuits in lithium-ion batteries. Among these, copper particles are the most common contaminants.
