Electrochemical EST are promising emerging storage options, offering advantages such as high energy density, minimal space occupation, and flexible deployment compared to pumped hydro storage. However, their large-scale commercialization is still constrained by technical and high-cost factors.
The results indicated that mechanical energy storage systems, namely PHS and CAES, are still the most cost-ef cient options for fi bulk energy storage. PHS and CAES approximately add 54 and 71 €/MWh respectively, to the cost of charging power. The project's environmental permitting costs and contingency may increase the costs, however.
