DC Bus Capacitor Design Method for Various Inverter Applications Abstract - This paper involves the selection and sizing of the appropriate type of dc bus capacitor for various applications utilizing PWM operated three-phase voltage source inverters, such as battery operated systems, PV (photovoltaic) systems, UPSs, and motor drives.
The paper also reviews the two capacitor technologies suitable for inverter applications. Overall, the paper helps the power electronics development and design engineer in the design and performance evaluation procedure of dc bus capacitors for three-phase inverters. The method is simple but rigorous and accurate.
The bus capacitor (Cbus) selection algorithm consists of few simulation iterations of a circuit model based on the output power requirements (Pout), assumed efficiency (η), and the duty cycle of the converter (D) this algorithm enables selection of capacitors that will provide the service life required by the application.
The dc bus voltage is selected as 800 V (±400 V). A film capacitor with the following specs is chosen; 220 μF, 600 V, 100 A rms, ESR=1 mΩ, Rth=8.4 °C/W (FFVE6K0227K) . Two capacitors are connected in series (midpoint gives the neutral terminal), yielding 110 μF equivalent dc bus capacitor.
Capacitor Cbus is charged every half line cycle by low frequency current and discharged continuously by the high-frequency current pulses drawn by the converter. This action results in a low frequency ac current (Ilf) and a high frequency ac current (Ihf) passing through Cbus.
First, inverter applications are classified and characterized in terms of dc bus current ripple behavior. Second, the dc bus capacitor technologies are reviewed. Then, the ripple, loss, and size calculation methods are provided leading to the design algorithm. Then, full design examples follow.
