Battery swapping or battery switching is an electric vehicle technology that allows battery electric vehicles to quickly exchange a discharged battery pack for a fully charged one, rather than to recharge the vehicle via a charging station. Battery swapping is common in electric forklift applications.
Battery swapping station (BSS) also known as battery switching station is a place where electric vehicle owners can rapidly exchange their empty battery with a fully charged one (see Fig. 17). This concept has been proposed as a new method to handle the obstacles regarding to the aforementioned traditional charging methods [272, 273].
This Battery Swapping Station is considered fast and efficient when compared to other types of charging stations. This reduces battery charging and improves battery life. The battery can be charged in off-demand hours and injected into the power grid during demand hours for additional revenue generation.
In order to attain optimal operation in the Battery Swapping Stations, many optimization techniques are proposed in [27, 28]. By adopting the BST, the life of the battery packs will increase due to slow charging and it generates the revenue to fleet owners in longer run.
The development of the battery-swapping technique faces certain challenges. In order for this technology to advance, batteries must first be standardized. Additionally, building battery swapping stations has a significantly higher initial capital cost than building conductive and inductive charging stations.
Other advantages include that the battery life expectancy can be prolonged because the battery swap station has the possibility to charge batteries with lower voltage compared to rapid charging stations. Fig. 17. Battery swapping station.
