With cell-to-pack technology, BYD designed the module-free battery pack using the Blade Cell. The geometry of the Blade Cell is a key to the realization of the module-free battery pack. With the module-free pack design, VCTPR and GCTPR can be enhanced to over 60% and 80%.
Cell-to-pack (CTP) designs integrate battery cells directly into the battery pack, eliminating intermediate modules to enhance energy density and simplify manufacturing. Cell-to-chassis (CTC) designs incorporate the battery cells directly into the vehicle’s chassis, optimizing space, reducing weight, and improving structural integrity.
With CTP technology, battery packs are assembled directly from the cells without the need for modules. Many battery manufacturers, such as BYD Auto, CATL, LG Chem, and SVOLT, are exploring CTP technology. The Blade Battery is BYD’s realization of the CTP concept (Figure 1). Figure 1. The conventional battery manufacturing process is from cell to module, and then from module to pack. This intermediate step divides the battery into separate modules, each of which can have its own independent battery management and diagnostic systems.
The product architecture of automotive batteries is apparently mostly modular, as it is characterized by some modules which are responsible for specific functions (such as battery management, safety connection and disconnection, as well as cooling), and of several other modules which contain the battery cells, responsible for storing energy.
The majority of the modules with a few degraded cells could still have a high residual value, if the cells could be recovered sorted and reused, hence the need to develop industrial processes to recover such cells in a functioning state, to test and sort them, and to use them in the same process chain which manufacture new batteries.
